Sweven - Reduced To An Ember (from The Eternal Resonance)

about

A friend who got an early promo of this album told me that it was going to be even better than the album 'Sweven', the swansong from Sweden's progressive death metal legends Morbus Chron. I laughed - impossible! I loved that record so much. The remark hardly prepared me for the incredible beauty that turned out to be the first record from new band Sweven, formed by Morbus Chron's Robert Andersson. 'The Eternal Resonance' is front to back listening, every damn time, and it's hard to point out a standout, but 'Reduced To An Ember' hits me a little bit deeper, on most days. When it all collapses after 5:30 and an acoustic guitar and piano lead the way to another wave of utterly crushing, progressive death metal that ultimately flow into one of the most beautiful closing riffs I have ever heard, I just melt. Timeless material.

Sweven is:

Robert Andersson - vocals, guitar, bass
Isak Rosemarin - lead guitar
Jesper Nyrelius - drums
Marcus Mohlin - keyboard instruments

lyrics

Lyrics:

An outer wall is torn down
An inner fire is quenched to ash
The smoldering yearnings shadow the sky
and deep within adversaries of ecstasy clash
Sanguine seas surround the trenches

There is a sound that drowns it all out
A phoenix’s song to lull the war
Senses sifted through ashy hands
Listen as the clamour’s tongue is cut

Hush and slip through the unending rift

Reduced to an ember
A life deprived of will
Drained to an empty shell
Like nights bereft of dreams,
passion devoid of vehemence
and tension without relief

Eager are those still in blossom
Not those whose faces bliss once adorned
Whose eyes saw a plague cast its shadow
and in time were broken and left forlorn

Once chosen, now destined to wither
Bearing the burden of death
in a procession of the blind
Towards the steepest of cliffsides,
chasing the lost and divine,
looming in the distance enshrined
